Are you building a business, running an organization, or managing your family? Perhaps you’re trying to lead yourself in this complex world. As leaders and achievers, we strive and yearn for “success.” We work hard. We do the reading. We get a coach (*wink*). The question is, when do you know you are successful?  That comes down to the definition of success. I’ll be honest, I’ve been struggling with this concept. I’ve been trying to measure my value beyond the P&L. How am I successful if I’m not measuring revenue? I want to contribute more than financially to my family and my community.

The deeper question is how do I define success?

Define Your Success

My coach challenged me and turned that question upside down suggesting I complete this sentence:
I feel successful when…
Simple, but not easy.

Here’s some of what I came up with:

I feel successful when I have choice in how I use my time.
I feel successful when I am balanced in my energy.
I feel successful when I am serving powerfully helping others create their own reality and transformation.
I feel successful when I am traveling.
I feel successful when I live in flow with abundance.

What could it look like to explore this with your team? The exercise might be, “When do we feel successful?” This is a great question if you’re evaluating your strategic plan or the end of a quarter.

When exploring this as a family, you might ask everyone to make their statements at the dinner table. Or you dig in and explore it in your quiet space. Make a list for yourself.

The next step? Post your list where you can see it daily. Review the list and note when you’re aligned, and when you’re off track. Then pivot where you can, back into alignment. What would it look like to get closer to feeling successful? Speak your truth and celebrate your success!
